Entertaining and pretty faithful adaptation of the classic novel, giving more of the characters' backgrounds than you might have seen in the musical. Valjean and Javert are have some particularly well-acted scenes.

Wonderful production and direction and beautifully filmed and acted (of course, it IS by the BBC). If you haven’t read the book, makes you understand why this is considered great literature, unlike the filmed musical, which never really engaged me or gave me a sense of why this is such a big deal. Especially loved the character (and actress) of the grown-up Eponine here.

Good acting but very slow at times. Still it is enjoyable.

If you were intrigued by the big screen musical that came out circa 2012, this will fill you in on the story quite a bit more (6 hours vs 2 hours). It's pretty faithful to the book, but of course still only has time to touch on the main highlights of the plot. The novel itself is the true masterpiece! The acting in this and the cinematography and pacing were pretty good. It was entertaining and faithful to the spirit of the novel.

It was a favorite book for many years. Hard to top musical for emotion. This did follow book. Watched but not enthused.

Note: I am not, not a fan of musicals however sometimes musicals/overall excessive drama/noise can so easily take away from the message that is needing to be heard. Only the Lord truly knows why I've always been drawn to these "Les Miserables" movies however I've never been able to fully grasp the story/message until now. Less is indeed more. Sometimes I just need to get away from all the excessive hype/noise/bling/stuff, to fully witness/experience the pure raw clean ART in the making. "Les Miserables unplugged" - YES INDEED. From this version done, I'm obviously not the only one that felt that way. Bravo BBC and thanks for sharing PBS and Library.

Started well but began to deteriorate when they got to Paris. Some scenes and dialogue were ludicrous. Too bad.

We really enjoyed this. I of course knew about the book, the musical, and the movie but had never had any interest in any of those 3 so I have no idea if this followed the story in those others. I would think it did. We checked this out for lack of anything else to view and really like it. The acting was very good and the sets and costumes showed how bleak things were for almost all people. If I had to find something to complain about, it would be the fact that British actors were playing French roles using their British accents in locations in France. I think it might have been better if it had been done with French actors speaking in French with subtitles as was done with "The French Village." But, I get that is very nitpicky. It was good and I would recommend it for sure.
