Little Star and her mother bake a beautiful Big Mooncake, so big and so beautiful that Little Star finds it hard to obey her mother's request not to touch it.

Have you ever wondered where the moon came from? This whimsical picture book offers up an origin story that’s out of this world! And yummy too.

This is such a whimsical book about the mischievous Little Star. The pictures are such fun to study for all the details. I fell in love with Grace Lin when I read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. I had no idea she was such a talented artist as well. Enjoy this moon story about a little girl, her stuffed rabbit, and the giant mooncake. I certainly did.

Up in the black night sky sits a Big Mooncake which Little Star's mama made. At a warning, the little girl in her star pajamas is told to not eat it. But who could resist such a scrumptious looking delight sitting there in its golden glory. So Little Star takes a bite before scampering off with her rabbit. This continues night after night because she reasons that there is no evidence. However, both the diminishing moon, and a trail of yellow crumbs sparkling in the dark point mama right to Little Star. Is this mother upset? No, she just takes her impish child in hand, and says lets make another. A Big Cake for Little Star is not only an adorably sweet portrayal of the relationship between mother and daughter, but it is also a delightfully whimsical explanation for the moon's phases. Because of its solid black backgrounds, the yellow and tans from the illustrations, and the white text sit out in a striking manner. The composition of the each page lends itself so well to the storytelling experience that it is also worth noting. It is most deserving of the Caldecott Honor award.

A Big Mooncake for Little Star offers so many things to delight in. I love how the girls black pajamas are seamless with the black background (sky). There is an inviting refrain that has that right touch of playful mischief. I can practically hear her flight as she races back to bed, crumbs trailing behind her, or the patter as she gets out of bed, (expressive) bunny in tow.

A Big Mooncake for Little Star is an experience in quiet joy, love, and beauty. It’s so good. Don’t wait for bedtime, and you’ll probably want to read it with cake.
