Quotes
Add a QuoteIt's always been about loss in our family, an abundance of loss. Although some things were surprisingly tenacious or were grimly hoarded. Books, of course, thermos flasks, and Mum's orange Le Creuset pots; a little Buddha statue she'd stolen. We took only what could fit in a short-wheel base Land Rover. It wasn't much once the saddles and all the dogs were loaded up.
But my father seemed to have surrendered to loss, to have welcomed the opportunity to leave it all behind again. It must have taken some undoing, although it helped that he'd chosen to live where a title deed wasn't a guarantee to land; a gun wasn't a guarantee to life. "The only guarantee is you'll end up losing it all anyway," Dad had said.
He sounded positively cheered by this certain outcome.
It matched the experience of his life.
It affirmed his decision to pare down and down and down until he was needless, invincible, he walked alone

Add a CommentI love Alexandra Fuller's writing, and her stories of her madcap family never fail to disappoint. If you have not read any of her previous books do! Her work documents growing up in Zimbabwe and then her parents' life in Zambia as farmers, and will make you laugh, and cry. Don't miss this one!
I loved this memoir which is not only of growing up in Southern Africa in a gayly eccentric family but then dealing with loss, dispossession, imminent death and death itself. The repeated loss is material then becomes personal when the author is separated both physically and emotionally from her family. Beautifully written . Travel Light,Move Fast is in turn laugh-out-loud hilarious, thoughtful and moving.
I can't seem to read enough of Fuller's work! Her parents are beyond unique.
I am just about finished reading this book, but wanted to make a statement to encourage others to pick it up. This is my third read from Ms Fuller, and I am not disappointed. This one is even better than her previous works I have read, and I certainly enjoy what and how she writes. I, too, must state a hankie is required and the laughter is spontaneous.
I will read anything by Alexandra Fuller. She has a gift for language, makes you laugh and brings you to tears. Her love for her family is amazing (and often hilarious!).
