Awesome fight scenes and action! Action really starts around the 25min mark and then is almost non-stop (first time I tried watching movie I stopped before it really got started, but it's worth waiting through the depressing first bit). I watched the scene with a knife fight several times because it was so impressive. Camera work is really good for giving you main character's often-panicked point of view and showing speed while not losing coherency or blurring out.
Kind of like "Taken" in some ways?

Exotic rural locations (Can Tho, Mekong Delta, Hau River and Ho Chi Minh City ...) with colorful cinematography and a "Taken/Kidnapped" plot, except the badass is a single mother highly trained in Vovinam, with negligible knives and guns in its many fight scenes. While the heroism of the protagonist is too much to believe, the film is entertaining as a rarely seen Vietnamese production, not unlike those early Hong Kong martial arts movies with Bruce Lee, Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

Primarily a martial arts movie with admirable pacing [some subtle moralistic scripting, but can get lost among the MA].
ON THE PLUS SIDE: The fight choreographer [Samuel Hefi Abrikh] previously worked on Jason Bourne movies, M:I and James Bond movies and although I'm unfamiliar with the Bond movies, I believe the Bourne movie fight scenes were among the best ever - - and those high standards continue with this movie.
ON THE BUMMER SIDE: Veronica Ngo [Ngo Thanh Van] transitioned from super model to actress/action actor, and as we know from Clash, she has a dynamic figure, which is hidden throughout this movie in dowdy working clothes - - major mood killer!

It's a colosal shame that Vietnam still remains under totalitarian [communist] rule which severely hampers the talents of the Vietnamese people. Anam has long been a formidable historical presence, save for that giant bully to the north. They defeated the colonialist French, defeated the Americans at tremendous cost, and while, technically speaking, China prevailed in their objective to remove the Russian missile emplacements on their Vietnam border in the 1978 Sino-Vietnam War, for every Vietnamese soldier who died in battle, 100 PLA soldiers lost their lives. Fortunate for the CCP to have so much cannon fodder to expend!
I'm not actually pro-capitalism, but free enterprise with human rights is always superior to totalitarian domination. [The Obama and Trump Administrations should have been moving to form a confederation of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong, but they really screwed up! {Yes, I'm aware that HK is part of China, but the Hong Kong Chinese are almost indistinguishable from Americans as they are descendants of those ancient merchant princes and the merchant class who probably gave the world the original marketplace!}]

Very weak dialogue, at least the English subtitles:

Any sacrifice is painful. It's what we sacrifice for that matters.
===
You must embrace the pain. Learn to stand up on your own.
===
You can learn martial arts. But you must be able to take the pain. And never give up.
===
There was a guy who hunted tigers in U Minh jungle. He told a lot of great stories. Usually they only go after male tigers and avoid females, especially when they guard their cubs. Female tigers, when their cubs are hungry, can get very aggressive. They don't care about anything but hunting for food.
Sometimes, hunters track down the lair, with all the cubs. Hunters could easily take them all, but they're wise enough not to do so. Do you know why?
Never mess with a tigress guarding her cubs. She won't forget it for the rest of her life. She'll go to the end of the world... just to kill the poor fxcking bastard that took her cubs.

I might be in the wrong place... but you took the wrong kid.
