An in-depth look at the relationship between the late musician Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. Nick Broomfield's most personal and romantic film of his storied career starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of community of expat artists, writers, and musicians. Never-before-seen footage shot by Broomfield and legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker make for a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960's bohemia.

The ending of this documentary really touched me. I love Leonard’s music and poetry but glad I never met the man. There could have been more footage of his performances but it was already on the long side for what it had to say. For those interested in him, I recommend this.

Interesting to see how he got into the music business, the rest of the story showed a very selfish, self absorbrd man.

Great documentary but such a sad story of life choices. Thankfully I was too young during the 60's to have been so influenced.

Cohen can weave magic with his words and his music
but under it all lies a darkness and sometimes a carelessness with the lives of others.
touching to learn more about Marianne and frightening to learn about the enormous consumption of drugs.
his parting words to Marianne at the end of both of their lives were redemptive

there is very little of his music in this documentary - for that I highly recommend the dvd of the Live in London concert from 2009

Cohen’s music was so evocative of mood, yet his lyrics the product of a limited attention span: Now it can be told that he ‘experimented’ with psychedelics the way most people experiment with a morning cup of coffee. Who would have thought? A film that makes you feel that you’re witnessing unique lives and times, often a bit sad, most of them likable people with the courtesy to direct destructive inclinations inward.

I appreciate Cohen’s artistry and I am someone who doesn’t think of people as one dimensional but I wasn’t interested in these people. I thought it was okay but had nothing new to say about the artistic process or love or success. I did enjoy his equality of power digression and to learn that he was sabotaged by his manager and that’s why he got back out there.
It was nice to see the young Judy Collins induct him into singing his songs and to see Jennifer Warnes singing back up, she was a longtime friend but not a lover which he couldn’t get enough of, like drugs and God and whatever else he wanted at the moment.
The letter from Leonard to the dying Marianne and his memory of a gentler time that he “overthrew” was very moving.

Wonderful movie, cannot say enough good things about. A fan of Leonard Cohen and his music. I did not know anything about his private life other than he was from Montreal.
