"Bill Gates shares what he's learned in more than a decade of studying climate change and investing in innovations to address the problems, and sets out a vision for how the world can build the tools it needs to get to zero greenhouse gas emissions. Bill Gates explains why he cares so deeply about climate change and what makes him optimistic that the world can avoid the most dire effects of the climate crisis. Gates says, "We can work on a local, national, and global level to build the technologies, businesses, and industries to avoid the worst impacts of climate change." His interest in climate change is a natural outgrowth of the efforts by his foundation to reduce poverty and disease. Climate change, according to Gates, will have the biggest impact on the people who have done the least to cause it. As a technologist, he has seen firsthand how innovation can change the world. By investing in research, inventing new technologies, and by deploying them quickly at large scale, Gates believes climate change can be addressed in meaningful ways. According to Gates, "to prevent the worst effects of climate change, we have to get to net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases. This problem is urgent, and the debate is complex, but I believe we can come together to invent new carbon-zero technologies, deploy the ones we have, and ultimately avoid a climate catastrophe""--

Opinion

From Library Staff

Nonfiction. In this latest work, Gates makes detailed arguments for what it will take to bring our net carbon dioxide emissions to zero, a necessary prerequisite for preventing a human-made climate disaster in the near future. (Library Journal)

A poor excuse for a Climate Book. Written at the 8th grade level. Lots of self serving statements. He thinks that heat pumps are new?? My father was installing them in new homes in the early 1950s. This book has no original thoughts, just 1000 quotes from his advisers.
Bill you destroyed A123 and replaced it with a poor copy Excel, then Ruined Netscape Navigator. Stay home and stop wasting fuel on all your fancy around the world trips.

I don't buy his preaching. If he didn't throw his wealth behind it, this would be a non-starter. Read other opinions like "Cool It."

This book is well written, easy to understand, and laid out in a format that should make it easily accessible to all readers. I found this to be an extremely interesting book to read, and Mr. Gates has definitely done a lot of research to support his proposed solutions.

A lot of his facts and figures are drawn from the United States, but Mr. Gates has used a number of other countries as examples of what the United States and other rich countries can and should do to alleviate the climate problems the world is currently facing.

It was nice to see that the opinions and actions of climate change deniers we're ignored, as not only was thus outside the scope of the book, but it would simply have derailed a very important discussion.

An excellent book, highly recommended.

This book is depressing because the conclusion I reach after reading it is that we humans are not going to get it together and we are not gonna save our world. Our whole world. Talk about existential dread. The author is trying to be optimistic, but...

Gates' book is a comprehensive, easy-to-understand analysis of the major factors contributing to green house gases and what our best options are for getting to zero emissions by 2050. It addresses misinformation and common misperceptions, making it clear that single focus solutions, such as renewable energy sources, will not be enough to meet demand. Success means lowering the "green premium" - the cost of using low/zero emission alternatives - and requires a combination of government policy, technological innovation, and favorable market forces. The global coordination needed will not be easy to achieve and we are running out of time. The book concludes with actions that we as citizens and consumers can take to make a difference.

Bill Gates' book "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster" is a daunting breakdown of what needs to change across the board from policy to how we make things to get the world to zero carbon emissions, while taking into account the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable of the world. Importantly, he details points of particular challenge that will require extra attention/resources/study and also areas where the solutions are in reach but need to be implemented and quickly. By doing so he lays out a plausible (it seems) roadmap forward.

I came away with the feeling that there is a project due in a week that I would have needed four to do, but that I haven't started yet.

Being who he is, Gates has a particular perspective on things and is more optimistic about our prospects. Personally I'm less sanguine, but good luck to us all regardless! We have truly have a steep climb ahead of us.

We should applaud Bill Gates. He could do anything. He chooses to involve himself in CARING about the earth and it's inhabitants. We live in the US.... we are a WE society. We are an angry country. We care about ourselves. We should all put down the remotes and know more about cause and effect and our planet. I think about those who have gone before us and their commitment to family and country......this is a serious topic.
The place we live, the place which we take for granted. I'm sad when anonymous people make ugly comments from the privacy of their computer and phony names.

An excellent book, partly because he takes an optimistic line about what solutions are possible rather than just reiterating scare tactics that we've all heard before. Bill Gates's analysis of the problem is good, and of course he's going to suggest technological solutions since that's his background and what he's good at, and frankly, they have the most chance of success. And it's a compassionate approach, since he admits that we can't expect the Third World not to want the same things that we have; our challenge is to allow progress while also taking steps to reduce climate change. And he does a good job of outlining what that would look like and what's to be done. Ignore the negative reviews; this is a good book worth reading.

The reviewer below makes a most idiotic comment about "shooting the messenger" ---- in the same category as a chilling author of fiction, a Chicom--American, who considered herself erudite for quoting mass-murdering Mao Zedong!!!
Bill Gates had many family connections and members of the Gates family excelled at hiring thieves and embezzlers -- hiring that last embezzler was why Bogle & Gates was dissolved, not the most brilliant of choices. Just as the ignorant, unscientific release of genetically engineered mosquitos in six locations around the planet resulted in a Zika virus epidemic at each of those six locations was not the most brilliant of choices and highly destructive to mother and child!!!
Communist "science" --- whether from China or Russia or the USA (Fred Hutch, UW, Stanford, University of Minnesota, etc.) is not science!!! Claims that something has been "debunked" without presentation of factual evidence is also NOT science! News has recently surfaced that Bill Gates is acting as an advisor to the Chinese Communist Party in the best ways to propagandize the North American public --- this isn't news to some of us who have long recognized his cozy relations with the butchers of Beijing!

Bill Gates achievements: sued the Indian immigrant to death -- the fellow who owned the rights to the name "Internet Explorer"; stole the original DOS operating system from Gary Kildall --- proof --- $1 billion out-of-court settlement to the holder of the rights to that legacy software; on the day after the attacks on 9/11/01, Gates quietly enacted an unscheduled layoff of 1,000 employees at Microsoft in Redmond -- what a true "patriot"; in 2006 Gates handed over the source code of Windows operating system to the Chinese Communist Party (from 2008 to 2012 Chicom military hackers made over 1 billion, I repeat 1 billion, hacks into gov't agencies and the private sector), etc., etc.

Reading the comments Bill Gates certainly has stirred up emotions! The book describes the daunting challenge we face with climate. It also exposes the many difficult challenges ahead to mitigate warming. One may disagree with his prescriptions, if so, fine. What better ideas do you have? This is a difficult debate we must start having, a serious debate not about the diagnosis but about the action plan. Gates' book is as good a place as any to start.

'Shooting the messenger' gets us nowhere. No, maybe it allows us fool ourselves and to ignore this problem. Weill it is not going away. Hope is not a strategy, we must have the will and engagement to develop a strategy.
