When she is betrothed to the powerful prince Kestrin, Princess Alyrra embarks on a journey to his land with little hope of escaping the confines of her royal life. Then a terrifying sorceress robs Alyrra of both her identity and her role as princess. And Alyrra seizes the opportunity to start a new life for herself as a goose girl. The more she learns of prince Kestrin and his kingdom, the pain and suffering its people endure, as well as the danger facing Kestrin from the sorceress herself, Alyrra is caught between two worlds. She must decide who she is, and what she stands for. -- adapted from jacket

I loved this beautifully written retelling of the Goose Girl. Thorn was an outstanding YA novel featuring a fierce and determined young woman, Alyrra, who finds herself in circumstances outside of her control and continually has to adjust and ultimately decide whether or not doing her duty is worth it. I loved the world the author created and despite the YA label, it's a title that I found to have a strong crossover to adult fantasy. This one had strong Daughter of the Forest vibes if your a Juliet Marillier fan. I also think fans of Naomi Novik's Uprooted will find a lot to like here.

Despised by her court and abused by her brother, Princess Alyrra does not trust herself, the protection offered by the King of Menaiya, or the enigmatic Prince Kestrin. Played as a pawn and betrayed, she grasps the opportunity to escape her fate and reinvent herself as a lowly servant. As she delights in honest work and faithful friends, however, her loyal heart can't ignore the dangers that threaten the kingdom. A re-telling of The Goose Girl.

This retold fairy tale takes on new life In these pages. Fine writing, likable characters, with just a bit of magic and suspense. My first five star book of the year! I looked forward to time to read and dreaded finishing the book. I can’t wait to read more by Intisar Khanani!
