Opinion

From Library Staff

Henri "Halti" Haltiwanger is quite the charmer. He is many things - a first-generation American born to Haitian parents, a student at a prestigious academy, and an excellent dog walker. There seems to be one person impervious to his charms though, one Corinne Troy.

Great book; it follows Henri "Halti" Haltiwanger as he navigates the last few months of high school. As a high school senior myself, a lot of topics hit close to home. However, this book's take on immigrant families and the "hunger" that comes with being a first-gen son or daughter infused this book with a deeper message. I recommend it.

I loved this book! I mostly just read YA fantasy (usually with female protagonists) but I'm so glad I stepped outside my comfort zone for this one. Even though "Charming as a Verb" is about a first generation immigrant in New York City and living on the periphery of super wealthy classmates, Henri's experience of college application anxieties rang true even for a Midwestern girl. Seeing Henri's growth throughout the novel was a delight. Classism, racism, family, romance, and even just the right amount of puppies--this book has it all.
