"The Crucible meets True Grit in this riveting adventure story of a fugitive girl, a mysterious gang of robbers, and their dangerous mission to transform the Wild West. In the year of our Lord 1894, I became an outlaw. The day of her wedding, 17 year old Ada's life looks good; she loves her husband, and she loves working as an apprentice to her mother, a respected midwife. But after a year of marriage and no pregnancy, in a town where barren women are routinely hanged as witches, her survival depends on leaving behind everything she knows. She joins up with the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of outlaws led by a preacher-turned-robber known to all as the Kid. Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. But to make this dream a reality, the Gang hatches a treacherous plan that may get them all killed. And Ada must decide whether she's willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all. Featuring an irresistibly no-nonsense, courageous, and determined heroine, Outlawed dusts off the myth of the old West and reignites the glimmering promise of the frontier with an entirely new set of feminist stakes. Anna North has crafted a pulse-racing, page-turning saga about the search for hope in the wake of death, and for truth in a climate of small-mindedness and fear"--

It's an alt-history western where women are only valued for their ability to have children. Ada gets accused of witchcraft when she doesn't breed after a year of marriage and she runs off to join the Hole in the Wall gang. It's a great premise, but I didn't enjoy the story ultimately. It did not land its ending well. So it's okay, but only okay.

Bloody 2 star novel. Always feels like a waste of my time. Skip this one. It's full of lazy writing skip jumps in time and a very unsatisfactory ending. The beginning promises a thrilling tale, but don't be fooled, it delivers nothing in the end.
The best part? The cover.

a group of women brought together after being ostracized by their communities for being barren, and accused of witchcraft, form their own family of outlaws, seeking to create their own community where women can be safe and in power of their own lives. I enjoyed this book, but the ending felt rushed... seems like it's being set up for sequels.

Everyone’s hurt in this western. Women have no purpose other than to bring children into the world through their bodies or helping another woman do so. Men own everything including women and the rights to having their child by a year into a marriage. If they don’t have a child it’s the woman’s fault and she gets labeled a witch. This is a western that flips the outlaw idea aka calamity Janes but it’s still a western and outlaws still rob, hurt and kill people to get by. I liked some of it for awhile but it started to Get old and at under 300 pages it felt too long.

No.t sure I was looking for an alt-history, feminist western, but I sure found one, and it's great! The year is 1894, and America is still reeling from a Flu epidemic some 60 years earlier that wiped out 9/10ths of the population. As the story opens, Ada is a young woman in a small western town who is unable to bear children after several months of marriage. The daughter of a midwife and exceptionally skilled herself, Ada becomes a convenient scapegoat when other women are unable to deliver babies as well, and is accused of witchcraft. The story follows Ada's tale as she leaves her parents and sisters, and eventually hooks up with the Hole-In-The-Wall Gang, which in this version is mostly composed of women with histories not too dissimilar from Ada's own, led by the charismatic The Kid. Ana's story is brilliantly told by author North, and every character, including Ada, little sister Bee, and her new friends at the Hole-In-The-Wall, is fully developed. Highly recommended, even for readers who do not identify as western fans.

Set in the 1800's, Outlawed is a dystopian feminist Western featuring Ada/Doc and the myriad members of the Hole in the Wall Gang. Highly recommend.

I liked the concept of this book, but I feel it never really “got there”. Easy fast read, entertaining enough. Definitely feminist.
