This is the 2nd book in the Murphy Shepherd series. You definitely need to read book 1 before this one. He jumps right in where the other one left off. It took me a bit to remember who everyone was and what had happened to each of them. This book is a bit more philosophical and introspective than the first one. We get Murphy’s background story and get a look at the emotional/mental healing process of the girls in Freetown. The action doesn’t pick up until the last half of the book and it ends with a good setup for book #3.

For me, this was the perfect recipe for the second book of a trilogy. The first one was firing on all cylinders. There was. So. Much. Action. In this second book, Murphy returns to Freetown with the four women he rescued in 'The Water Keeper.' This is not 'happy ever after,' but there is hope. Unfortunately an evil force lurks in the shadows zeroing in on its target with no regard for collateral damage. As a part of this second installment we get more back story and some gaps are filled, especially regarding the early days with Bones and Marie. I thought it was perfectly balanced and am so looking forward to the third and final piece.
