Some revere this text as the greatest Chicano novel ever written, likely because of the edgy and catchy style of the militant lawyer, whose "fiction" mirrored the real and behind the scenes episodes of East L.A. and the volatile Chicano Movement in late 60's to early 70's... but its acclaim is also tied to the author's ethos in more ways than one. Historian Acuña called him a comet that burned out too fast, but his pioneering radical race lawyering and militant rebellion has also been recognized by law professor Ian Haney Lopez (Racism on Trial) and Hunter S. Thompson's classic ode "The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat" in Rolling Stone Magazine. His novel in 2010's may seem anachronistic because of sexual objectification of women, racial epithets and what's called "terrorism" today, but in the novel he also admired Liberace, Angela Davis, he connects with a Black woman, and fights the highest representatives of a racist white establishment toe to toe. So what if he set a racist judge's lawn on fire in Santa Monica, he did it for the right reason. Burn baby burn! Long live the run of the Brown Buffalo! Tierra o Muerte!
