I'm waffling between four and five stars. On a first reading, I reached the end feeling I'd had a superior four-star experience; but I also know I want to read this again--and probably again after that--because I sense repeat experience will provide added depth, meaning, and feeling. That tips the scales in favor of five stars. This book weaves together stories of the past and present, philosophical ponderings, dreams, impressions, memories, and more, with both words and pictures. It's the story of a 50-year-old, highly gifted, successful, and privileged white man figuring out that he doesn't have it all figured out, that he's never really learned to listen. It's intellectual and emotional in equal measure; though, like the character, it starts with the head and has an uncertain journey to the heart. In some ways, it's as much a coming-of-age story as anything out there in the Young Adult category. It's thoughtful and heartfelt and real, and designed for repeat reading.
