A flawed masterpiece. Back in the day, all anyone could think about was Bo Derek, Bo Derek. Freed from the obligation to be either sexy or timely, 10 stands out in this era as a surprisingly tough-minded piece of work. Yes, there are pratfalls. Yet look at Blake Edwards' camera placements. When was the last time you saw a movie with so many wide-angle shots? He rarely moves in for a close-up, and then to great effect, such as Dudley getting a bumblebee up his nose. More than that, 10 now stands as a relic of a world that doesn't exist anymore. Listen to the music Mancini wrote. Forget Ravel. It's all about Mancini...and the gorgeous harmonies of "show" type tunes that no one will or can write in our time of schlock. Even the job of Dudley Moore's character, which barely existed in 1979, has since vanished into thin air.
