I came to "The Songlines" via David Alban's book, "Becoming Animal," and a recommendation by my brother. I share their consensus. As an evolutionary biologist by academic training, I always enjoy it when non-biologists develop keen insights into the field, blowing fresh air across often doctrinaire tenets. Songlines are an ancient language developed without the constraints of the written word, specific about location, but at the same time universal enough to pass first hand knowledge of geography to men and women who had never crossed it; people who understood the melody if not the local words.
