This is a lovely novel, the story of a woman who gave up her "beautifully arranged" life for the sake of God. The author describes life in a Benedictine monastery as a great wheel of work and prayer, making this life seem very beautiful indeed. It was most interesting to compare this novel with the memoir "I leap over the wall" by Monica Baldwin, to learn that unless you are truly called to this life by God, you will not make it all the way through. The ultimate lesson, "Nothing but the whole is good enough for God," is drawn through the whole book with lovely writing, multiple points of view, and backing and forthing through time. I could have done without Dame Veronica's story, but I suppose even that was ultimately necessary to the entire tale. Altogether this is a beautiful book and I highly recommend it.
