When Enrique was 5, his mother left Honduras and illegally entered the United States to earn money to finance a better life for her children. As the years passed, Enrique missed his mother so much that he tried and failed 7 times to enter the U.S. On his 8th try, he made it. In clear-eyed, uncompromising prose, Sonia Nazario, an immigrant herself, tells the harrowing story of what it takes to enter another country illegally. In Enrique's case, he had to avoid both Mexican and U.S. border patrols. Nazario also follows the story after Enrique finds his mother and their very rocky road to an eventual reconciliation. He was one of the lucky ones as she relates to her readers what often happens in these situations. Photos of Enrique and his family put a very human face on the illegal immigration debate. As the author notes at the end what would make mothers stay home --"Maria Isabel's mother, Eva, says simply, 'There would have to be jobs. Jobs that pay okay. That's all.' This book is the 2019 March selection of the Willa Cather Book Club.
