Watching this movie, I was reminded of the surrealistic movie, "Pi". Both movies involve somebody (with issues) trying to solve a difficult problem that had a somewhat subjective application than merely a task for a particular field. In "Pi", his solution could predict stock prices (and at one point, he thought his computer gained self-awareness) ... in this piece by Terry Gilliam, the solution could provide the meaning of life. In both movies, the process saps the protagonist so much that they lose themselves and in the end, they fail and they become less than what they were when they started. However, in "Pi", the hero (Max Cohen), becomes less paranoid and reclusive in the end (but loses whatever insight he had into his quest). In this movie, Qohen Leth (notice the name similarity) becomes more reclusive and less driven than earlier ... like he lost the will to live (the meaning of life?).
