SUMMARY: "The best parts of Christmas Day happen around Fritz's tree." Fritz's family brings home a tree. When they begin to decorate, they realize there are not enough ornaments to cover the tree. But Fritz discovers that almost anything can be an ornament. Before long, the whole tree is covered. Presents are arranged and the family gathers around the tree for Christmas. But eventually the tree must go. "Fritz is not ready for Christmas to be over." But, using his creativity and imagination, Fritz finds a way to keep Christmas alive even if it's just a little bit. (Note: I would classify this as a secular Christmas story, but fun for all.) ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in pen and ink and watercolor. They have a cartoon quality to them. THE GOOD: I loved the creativity of the family when it came time to find ways to cover their tree in a non-traditional way. They had a great time decking the tree. Fritz absolutely loved the tree, mostly I think, because of the sense of closeness to his family it brings. My favorite part is the end when he can't let the tree go, but he finds a way to substitute something else that will remind him of the joy of the big tree. THE NOT AS GOOD: It is difficult to connect to the story at first the way it is told in the 3rd person. If feels as if it were translated from another language. This gets better as the story goes on. AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 3-7
