This is a great book to get a better understanding of the immigrant experience. Ravi was the top of his class and very popular at his school in India. In his new school in America he is a target of bullying because he dresses differently, eats different food, and has a strong accent. He first assumed the most popular boy in school would be his best friend, especially since he is also of Indian descent (although born in America). The story is also told from the perspective of a white boy who is also a target due to his unusually large stature and a learning disability. Lots of opportunities here to get a better understanding of what it feels like to be different and how friendships can come from those you least expect.
