I think this film may be fruitfully viewed as a not-too-veiled allegory about the dangers inherent in the great inequalities of wealth in Western society. Life in the high-rise bespeaks a culture of decadence, infrastructural decay, and an economic system that rewards profit-making ahead of quality production. It also echoes some of the themes in the film adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club".
