In the end, I enjoyed this book despite finding it fairly slow moving - especially at the beginning when the Count manages to maintain a pretty lavish lifestyle despite being displaced into a tiny upstairs room at the luxurious Metropol hotel. I suspect in real life he would have been banished to some place much less cushy and much more cold. For that reason, I had to work fairly hard at suspending my disbelief to continue with this book. I did, though, enjoy reading about the enduring friendships he formed over the years.
