Excellent Book . Highly Recommended . I have enjoyed every single one of Chris Matthews' works and this tome is by far his absolute best . Then again , one can not go wrong writing about Robert Francis Kennedy ( ... a personal favorite of mine ) . The ' Mutual Contempt ' between Lyndon Johnson and Bobby Kennedy defined the 1960's Decade ( ... for better and for worse ) . Indeed , their hatred towards each other becomes quite interesting as a surprising amount of what Johnson did was in reaction to what he thought Bobby Kennedy would do if he was the President . Would RFK have captured the 1968 Democratic Nomination ? Matthews' makes it quite clear that Humphrey's backroom machinations and consummate deal - making might very well have denied RFK the eventual Prize .
