In the year 2024, Lauren Olamina lives with her family in one of the only safe places left outside Los Angeles. When fire destroys not only her home but kills her entire family, Lauren begins an odyssey to the safety of the north with other refugees.

Black speculative fiction encompasses both fantasy and science-fiction genres, where in which Black characters are at the center of the story, usually in fantastical worlds dissimilar to our own. Even so, these stories are typically used as social commentary on contemporary society, the plights and successes of Black people, and to further progressive social change.
