Le roman africain: Novels of North and French West Africa

The title of this list suggests a niche, but the massive square mileage occupied by the former French colonies in Africa, the number of French nationals who moved there, the subsequent, post-colonial emigration to France, and the indelible mark of the French language on African society are unavoidable. The titles represented here have been translated into English—itself, in an anglo-centric kind of way, an indication of this literature's significance—rendering linguistic comparisons between these diverse authors more or less moot. Nonetheless, they share an elusive and often fraught cultural ancestry that, taken as a whole, constitute a fascinating canon.
