I loved the complexity and depth of the family relationships in this book. Reynolds deftly explores big issues through the eyes of a relatable character. Highly recommended for ages 9-13.

Ooof, this is a tough one. A very challenging subject for a picture book, but Tonatiuh's execution is flawless. His realistic portrayal of the migrant experience makes for some extremely intense sections, tempered somewhat by the animal protagonists. I would recommend this to families who have faced similar situations and for older kids learning about migrant labor and immigration.Ooof, this is a tough one. The plot is an elementary school version of Ocean's 11, the feel is dark, quirky, edgy, precise. The poet Fleischman doesn't waste a word and the weirdness of Dumpster Diver Roberts is a perfect fit.

The illustrations are strong enough that this would even be a great wordless book. Inspiring starting point for a discussion about the Pullman porters, Langston Hughes, African-American history, or race. The poem is so brief that stretching the text into picture book length would have been a mistake in less capable hands. Because of the depth and subtleties, recommended for grades 1-4.The illustrations are strong enough that this would even be a great wordless book. Funny illustrations, good premise, but gets tiresome about halfway through and falls flat at the end. In spite of that, a solid bibliotherapy choice for understanding the impact of one's behavior choices. Better for one-on-one or small groups because of picture size. Quick, helpful introduction followed by big step-by-step drawings. Nice variety of Pokemonish characters, all at a beginner/high-beginner level of difficulty.
The 27 monsters are based on chubby animal shapes, making them cuter than they are scary.

This was an engaging audiobook. The author does a good job of tapping into the emotional reality of a 14 y.o. in extraordinary circumstances. Especially nice was the full suite of well-rounded characters and the subtle and logically consistent mermaid world-building. The two main drawbacks are the seemingly endless section right at the beginning about her getting her first period (yawn) and the young-sounding voice of the narrator, which can be a bit grating at times until you get used to it. No great work of literature, but strongly recommended for fans of YA chicklit with a touch of fantasy. This was an engaging audiobook. The dogs are cute and each has a distinct personality. Other than that: Meh. As a parent I was not fond of the 'let's run away from home, it's fun!" theme. As a children's librarian, I was disappointed in the uneven anthropomorphization of the dogs, the lack of character for the humans, and the overly simplistic ending. The dogs are cute and each has a distinct personality. This is a beautifully illustrated, well-crafted book with an unusal, interesting, and touching story. I have no idea who the core audience would be for it- preteen boxing enthusiasts who like simple picture books? Highly recommended. I wish this was a better book. Lacks the usual Wells magic. It doesn't work as either an entertaining read-aloud (unlike her masterpieces such as Noisy Nora) or a bibliotheraputic tome about tantrums.

Perfectly cute and charming illustrations save this first-day-of-school picture book from mediocrity. The "pulling the wrong object out of the magic tail" gag is clever and makes my 3.5 y.o. giggle, but other than that, the plot is thin and the book seems a little forced. There are much better books available on this topic, I would recommend this one for Emma Dodd fans only.Perfectly cute and charming illustrations save this first-day-of-school picture book from mediocrity. The text is oversimplified and does not read aloud smoothly. The large, clear photographs are interesting and engaging. Not the best book on the topic, but a decent supplement to more thoughtfully crafted titles, such as Joanna Cole's The New Baby At Your House and Fred Roger's The New Baby. The text is oversimplified and does not read aloud smoothly. Although the pictures are starting to look a little dated, this is one of the best books available on the topic. Clear, developmentally appropriate language is paired with interesting photographs that both inform and provide starting points for conversations. The best part is the very thorough, yet simple discussion of the emotional complexity involved in having a baby join the household.
